San Francisco is so very visual. In every conceivable corner of the peninsula, there is something interesting, and much of it is free. A walk though San Francisco�fs diverse neighborhoods offers endless delightful discoveries. Listed here are but a few freebies to get you started.
Walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito. It is an exhilarating experience. (You want might to catch the ferry back from Tiburon, which is not free!)
Wander through the City Farmers�f Market on Wednesdays and Sundays in the U.N. Plaza in the Civic Center. It�fs a wonderful environment and a great place to sample produce, food, flowers and baked goods from northern California vendors. Join local chefs as they browse through the wonderful fresh selections at the Farmers�f Market held outside of the Ferry Building Market every Tuesday and Saturday. The vibrant atmosphere is wonderful; the selection of fresh food, outstanding.
Walk along active bay on the Embarcadero, beginning at the Ferry Building and ending at Fisherman�fs Wharf. Feel the cool breeze and salt air, enjoy watching the boats and ferries coming and going, see the great bridges, and discover some special spots along the way.
See relicts from the wild gold rush days displayed in the Wells Fargo History Museum, the Bank of California Museum, the Haslett Warehouse Visitor Center, and the National Maritime Museum �| all are free. However, there is a fee to board the historic ships at Hyde Street Pier.
Walk through the Presidio, see Fort Point and the enormous southern foot of the Golden Gate Bridge planted by it, and visit Fort Mason. They�fre all free.
You�fll have to pay to ride the famous cable cars, but the Cable Car Museum is free.
Items showing the tremendous heat generated by the 1906 fire, maps showing its scope, and exhibits of the valiant methods used to contain it are among the interesting displays at the free San Francisco Fire Department Museum. Diary entries tell the human side.
Walk through Grace Cathedral. It�fs beautiful. Enter through the bronze relief Doors of Paradise and walk along the Labyinth, a mystical maze of meditation carved in patterns on the cathedral floor. The labyrinth is a replica of the one in the Chartres Cathedral.
Visit the many wonderful gardens, lakes and special places in Golden Gate Park. Admission is free as is the Strybring Arboretum, but the Conservatory of Flowers and the Japanese Tea Garden charge admission. A $3 park map is a helpful purchase.
See the murals in Coit Tower. There is a fee to get to the observation deck, however, the powerful murals, frescos painted by various artists in a 1930�fs WPA project, are free.
